I am not an expert on any of these subjects.

Corporate History:
1885 The Hazel Glass and Metals Company was founded by Charles Brady and CH Tallman in Wellsburg, West Virginia

The National Glass Company began with only one product, the glass inserts in Mason jars. Eventually, it produced many types of glass for commercial packaging.

The Atlas Glass Company was formed to specifically make fruit jars. It also made opal glass medicine jars and commercial containers.

Wheeling Metal Plant was founded by JC Brady in Wheeling, West Virginia. It produced zinc caps.

The Republic Glass Company in Clarksburg, West Virginia was founded by WS Brady.

1902 Hazel Glass and Metals Company and Atlas Glass Company joined with Republic Glass Company and Wheeling Metal Plant to become the Hazel-Atlas Glass Company, headquartered in Wheeling, West Virginia. The new company expanded manufacturing to economical tableware.

In the 1920’s, Hazel-Atlas purchased several plants during the economic crisis following World War I. By the 1930’s, it had fifteen plants. Hazel-Atlas was the largest glass manufacturer in the world.

1956 Continental Can Company bought the company, and it became the Hazel-Atlas division of Continental Can Company, producing Hazelware.

1963 Continental Can was broke up due to an anti-trust lawsuit.

In 1964, six plants were sold to Brockway Glass Company as part of the anti-trust lawsuit.

1972 the West Virginia Hazel-Atlas plant was bought by Brockway Glass and continued to produce Hazelware.

1977 Anchor Hocking bought the Clarksburg factory. It closed in 1987.

Manufacturing and Product History:
1886 Hazel Glass Company built a new plant in Washington, Pennsylvania. Charles Brady worked with Wheeling Mold & Foundry Company founder Charles Blue to develop a machine to mechanically produce glass containers. Charles Blue developed such a machine, called the Blue Machine.

The Hazel Glass Company is responsible for several machinery inventions.

1923 Hazel-Atlas first manufactured dinnerware that is now called Depression glass; it manufactured much of the Depression glass. Additionally, in this year it began production of the Ovide pattern.

1936 Hazel-Atlas was the first company to receive a patent for a glass color, Platonite.

Crystal denotes a clear color, not a glass type.

Orchard Series: Apple Tree

A snack tray with cups set. The tray has a ruffled edge in the shape of an apple tree with a trunk and branches thorugh the centerand extending out the bottom about an inch creating a handle. The trunk is and branches are left clear while the canopy is embossed creating a frosted effect. The cup is clear with a ball handle. This pattern is not to be confused with the Apple fruit design.
